Habitat Committees

The staff of Habitat are only able to perform their duties to the extent that there are teams of volunteers supporting the operations. We have several committees that are in the process of restructuring and are in need of committed individuals willing to roll up their sleeves and accomplish tasks under the direction of a Board member as chair of the committee. Committees usually meet monthly for short periods of time and routinely require additional work either in the office here, or from home, for an average of 5-10 hours per month. Following is a list and summary of the committees that need you:

Family Selection:

The Family Selection committee work together through the homeowner application process. Responsibilities include:
· Screen and interview applicants.
· Outline the requirements for buying and owning a Habitat home to the potential homeowner.
· Make recommendations to board of directors of eligible families.

Family Support:

The Family Support committee reports to the board of directors and is responsible for planning, implementing and evaluating the affiliate's support program.
The committee specifically works with families through:
· Sweat equity.
· Homeownership education.
· The closing process.
· Adjustment to new responsibilities.
· Continued partnership.

Site Selection:
The Site Selection committee works with the board of directors in defining focus areas or neighborhoods and works to acquire building sites within them.
The opportunities offered to the community to participate in the construction process are vital to the continued growth of the affiliate. Volunteer participation, recognition and encouragement spreads the good news of Habitat throughout the community and sustains the health and growth of the affiliate.
The Site Selection committee is responsible for:
· Site selection and procurement.

Construction:
The Construction committee works with Site Selection to evaluate potential sites, creates workable house plans, develops systems and schedules for organizing families and volunteers for construction, and establishes contacts in the professional community.
The Construction committee is responsible for:
· Construction coordination and schedules.
· Construction supervision.
· Material procurement.
· Safety

Volunteer:
Habitat is a volunteer based organization and for this reason there is a large number of eager workers. There is always a need for those willing to coordinate volunteers.
Responsibilities include
· Coordinating with Construction manager to determine the number of volunteers needed per workday.
· Coordinating with Lunch coordinator to ensure all volunteers are provided lunch.
· Notifying volunteers when and where to report to construction site.
· Sending Thank You notes.

Fund Raising & Publicity:
The Fund Raising & Publicity committee assumes the leadership for implementing the public relations and fund-raising policies and goals of the board of directors. Fund-raising assistance is needed with approaching donors for either cash or "in-kind" gifts of material, labor, property, or support.
Public relations include writing for newsletters, newspapers, advertising for special events, and public speaking.

Fiscal Responsibility & Administration:
The Finance and Administration Committee works with the executive director in balancing the need for efficiency with the importance of maintaining a low as possible overhead burden. The responsibilities includes;
· Assist the executive director in developing a balanced budget during the annual planning process to cover administrative needs for the year.
· Review and make recommendations to the board regarding Habitat personnel policies.
· Assist with hiring employees and in reviewing employee performance.
· Re-examine bylaws and bring before the board any necessary changes.
· Examine record keeping, computer systems, insurance and make recommendations for approval.

Nominating:
The Nominating Committee is responsible for recruiting and selecting a board that is effective and representative of the entire community.
It is responsible for identifying and recruiting prospective directors of the affiliate and present a slate of nominees for election as directors at the annual meeting. The Nominating Committee has an extremely important task to be sure that the board has overall balance and representation.
