Habitat's Walk-a-Thon 2011
(October 30, 2011 - Eisenhower Park)

Warm hearts prevailed on a cold morning to make the 2011 Walk-a-Thon a success! Despite an historic October snowfall the prior day, more than 120 walkers and volunteers and supporters showed up at Eisenhower Park on Sunday, October 30 to participate in our special event.

Boy Scout Troop 90 (Massapequa) and Girl Scouts Troops 1422 (Franklin Square) and 1688 (Uniondale) led all in the pledge of allegiance and affiliate president Kathleen McKiernan recited a heartfelt non-denominational prayer, calling attention to the critical work and continuing need of the Nassau affiliate of Habitat for Humanity.

After warming up with Starbucks coffee and fortifying our energy with treats from Whole Foods Market, participants of all ages and many communities took to the three-mile path with a spring in their steps. Brilliant fall colors accented the long line of walkers stretched out along the route. Among the walkers were: BSA Troop 90 (Massapequa), Girl Scout Troops 1422 (Franklin Square) and 1688 (Uniondale), the Carey H.S (Franklin Square) Habitat for Humanity club, Oceanside H.S. students, employees of Roslyn Savings Bank (a division of New York Community Bank) and Travelers Insurance, and many, many individuals that came to show support.

At the finish line, all huddled to hear the result of the raffles called by Andy LaRocca, Habitat Board member and event coordinator. We also appreciated the publicity given to us by WBAB radio 102.3 FM, News12, Roslyn Savings, and many others who helped to spread the word about the event. In addition to Starbucks and Whole Foods, the following companies lent their support: Roslyn Savings Bank (a division of New York Community Bank), WBAB radio 102.3, News 12, Girl Scout Troop 1422, and Troop 1688, Boy Scout Troop 90, & Long Island McDonalds, and many others who helped to spread the word about the event.

All funds raised from this event will be used to help Habitat for Humanity in Nassau County continue its mission to build low cost, simple, decent homes for hard working, low income Nassau County families.

The 2011 Walk-a-Thon was a good example of how people working together can have a significant impact on their communities.
